Winter Glamour: It’s all about Texture and Finish

Morlands Real Sheepskin Coat – Junk, Manchester
Black Bandeau Top – Unknown, swimwear
Gold Leather Pencil Skirt – River Island
Red Peep-Toe Courts – Coast

I don’t know whether it has been due to poor weather, poor finances or poor imagination on my part that recently I have found it difficult to get excited enough about fashion related things to post about them on this ‘ere blog. However, I do feel I am coming to the close of this period on online inertia, having, as I do, several interesting posts up my woolly winters sleeves. Watch this space!

Talking of woolly winter sleeves (see what I did there! … groan…)!  How fabulous; just HOW fabulous is this sheepskin coat? Yes, I know. Very fabulous indeed, thank you very much!  I think it is a heightened sensation in these times of shopping woe (economic what?) when you find a piece you not only love, but know that you can survive no longer without.  Money matters now mean that, for most folk, all those ‘I like it, but I’m not sure’ items must remain in the shop.  So then, just how many coins did I have to part from myself for this perfect purchase? A mere £40. That’s one zero; forty pounds.  To buy one new now would be more like £400.

I know it’s rather against what everyone seems to be telling us, as consumers, but in light of this kind of value for such an amazing product, I’m inclined to suggest we abandon the highstreet altogether. Yes, it’s conveinient to have all the clothes laid out in order, in a variety of sizes, and available to preview online (and buy, obviously) before you shop, but the prices and the quality of the fabrics are just so uninticing.  Think what £40 buys you in Topshop? A polyester top, or a belt.  I know that, to me, vintage is making more sense than ever. (Rant over! Sorry!)

Now, it is only in light of a piece as marvelous as Big Woolly that this slinky gold leather number is relegated to second mention in an outfit post.  It too commands the level of excitement that leads to the kind of floral verbosity I generally so abhor in fashion writing. Well, meh. It’s fucking fantastic! Mmm, look at it shine; perfect with pastels, perfect with black. It’s Christmassy, yes. Perfect for parties, absolutely. But it’s also great with boots, tights and a jumper for everyday wear. It even looks good over a lumberjack shirt. Moreover, gold is a serious trend for Spring Summer 2012 and the oh-so-flattering pencil shape is going nowhere fast.
This particular get-up was very much inspired by shapes seen on Prada’s Spring Summer 2012 catwalk:

I love the boxy shape of the coat that Big Woolly also has, and I think it looks so good with just a flimsy strip bandeau underneath.  I love the humour of the racing cars Muccia used in this collection – they remind me of the recently resurrected Milky Way adverts – but I’m not sure they spell investment buy! That brown, tan and white piped leather skirt minus the car is absolutely gorgeous and easily could become a wardrobe staple.

— Hmm, perhaps I can claim my dodgy hair/odd face in the outfit shot was also inspired by Prada’s funny mullets?

  1. Disillusioned with the high street… know the feeling, although Top Shop's just opened over here and everyone's going crazy for it. Anyway, if you'd like to see what the Australian fashion industry has as alternatives check out my latest post! http://stylewilderness.blogspot.com/2011/12/fairsquare-fashion-show.html
